Ask Amy: Learn more about the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IBPYP)

Global Community Charter School is currently in the process of obtaining authorization as an International Baccalaureate World School. As part of this process, GCCS has implemented the Primary Years Program (PYP or IB PYP). To help families understand the PYP we are introducing a series of informative talks with our PYP Coordinator Amy Brown: Ask Amy.

What is the PYP?

The PYP is an educational program for students aged 3 to 12 managed by the International Baccalaureate (IB) organization. The PYP program is based around 6 transdisciplinary themes:

What does "transdisciplinary" mean?

"Transdisciplinary" means that the PYP curriculum is globally relevant, significant, engaging, challenging, and conceptually based. The cool part about this is that it shows that our curriculum and therefore our students, are internationally aligned with IB PYP students around the world. IB PYP students could effectively attend any IB PYP school in the entire world and be able to meet the standards regardless of the location. We are producing students who can think in a meaningful way and have enduring understandings of content truly worth knowing.

How does GCCS use the transdisciplinary themes?

PYP sets out the 6 transdisciplinary themes as a guide for schools to use in developing their Program of Inquiry (POI). Each grade level moves through these 6 themes throughout the year as well as following the Common Core standards and the PYP Scope and Sequence to guide their practice.

What is your favorite thing about the PYP?

I love the fact that we are teaching our students in a such a meaningful way. I recently heard a quote about "preparing children for jobs that may not even exist yet." So, I believe it is vital that we focus on teaching students how to be THINKERS! This leads me to the other thing I love about PYP which is the learner profile. The fact that PYP is value based is amazing. We will talk more about the attributes of the learner profile next week...stay tuned!

Global Community Charter School se encuentra actualmente en proceso de ser una escuela mundial parte del Bachillerato Internacional. Lo bueno de esto es que nuestro plan de estudios y por lo tanto nuestros estudiantes están alineados a nivel internacional con los estudiantes del IB PYP en todo el mundo. Los estudiantes IB PYP podrían asistir de manera efectiva a cualquier escuela IB PYP en todo el mundo y ser capaces de cumplir con las normas, sin importar el lugar. ¿Cómo utiliza GCCS los temas transdisciplinarios?

El IB PYP establece los 6 temas transdisciplinarios como una guía para que las escuelas utilicen el desarrollo del Programa Investigativo (PI). Cada grado se mueve a través de estos 6 temas a lo largo del año, así como siguiendo los estándares del Common Core y el Alcance y Secuencia del PYP para guiar su práctica.

¿Cuál es su parte favorita del PYP?

Me encanta el hecho de que estamos enseñando a nuestros estudiantes de una manera muy significativa. Hace poco oí una cita sobre "preparar a los niños para hacer trabajos que ni siquiera existen todavía." Por lo tanto, creo que es vital que nos centramos en enseñar a los estudiantes a pensar por ellos mismos. Esto me lleva a la otra cosa que me gusta del PYP, que es el perfil del alumno. El hecho de que PYP se basa en valores es increíble. Vamos a hablar más sobre los atributos del perfil de aprendizaje la próxima semana ... ¡estén atentos!

International Spirit at GCCS

Ms. Panzica in Africa

When you walk into Global Community Charter School and meet our students and staff you can immediately feel the international spirit of our school. As a school located in the vibrant and multicultural neighborhood of Harlem and as a candidate for International Baccalaureate world school certification GCCS believes in the importance of exposing our students to a diversity of cultures, languages, and traditions.  One of the ways in which our school encourages cultural inclusion and exchange is by drawing unique and talented teachers from all over the world to compose our staff. Here are the international experiences of just a few of our teachers and staff:

Ms. Kennelly in Seville

Ms. Fenster, one of our Kindergarten teachers, was raised in Alexandria, Egypt and first taught public school in her home country. “English is taught in the elementary years combined with Arabic, followed by French in middle school” Ms. Fenster explained. From her experience teaching in Egypt, she understands the importance of learning different languages and exposing young people to the positive contributions that different cultures bring to the world.

Ms. Kennelly, another member of our Kindergarten team, taught in Seville, Spain before coming to GCCS. In Seville, Ms. Kennelly taught English Language Learners through role playing and lots of conversation. At GCCS, Ms. Kennelly brings the skills and experiences she has acquired abroad to her kindergarten students.

Our first grade teacher Ms. Bonfim is from Rio de Janiero, Brazil where she taught in Rio’s American School, a certified International Baccalaureate school. She loves to bring Brazilian culture to the classroom through music and art and enjoys discussing the differences between Brazil and USA with her students. Her descriptions of her home country have captured the imaginations of her students who hope to visit Brazil themselves!

Originally from Benin in West Africa, our third grade teacher Ms. Pognon is passionate about traveling and exploring the world. She said that traveling has opened her mind and allowed her to see the world from different perspectives. Ms. Pognon encourages her students to be as opened minded as she is.

Ms. Dorce's Class in Africa

Our third grade teacher Ms. Dorce comes from a Haitian-American family and is fluent in French/Creole. Her passion for education has brought her to Ghana, Benin and Gambia where she taught English through arts and music. Ms. Dorce said “teaching in Africa changed my life! It was such a happy atmosphere even though resources were very limited, the kids enjoy themselves learning and communicating through arts and music”.

Ms. Dorce’s teaching partner Ms. Scaccio is also a world traveler and international teacher. Ms. Scaccio taught in an environmentally friendly school in Thailand before she joined GCCS. Her school in Thailand was structured around Buddhist principles, such as appreciating all living things in the world. Ms. Scaccio said “As a teacher I had to inspire and motivate the kids to learn without using the traditional discipline techniques we use in America, such as rewards systems, detention or taking away recess”. She loves to see that in GCCS we teach our students to be open minded citizens just like she taught her students in Thailand.

Our dance teacher Ms. Panzica has been involved in multiple projects throughout Central America, Africa, Australia, India and the Caribbean. She has helped build homes, medical clinics, and children’s camps in addition to teaching dance in youth programs.

Ms. Brown in Chile

Before coming to GCCS our PYP Coordinator Ms. Brown lived in Chile for 4 years where she also worked as a PYP coordinator as well as a Kindergarten teacher. She said that living in Chile was a great experience but very challenging since she had to learn Spanish very quickly in order to be able to communicate with her students’ parents.

Fifth grade teacher Ms. Pierre-Louis is a native Canadian but considers herself a citizen of the world. She has traveled to more than 80 countries and has taught in 7 schools around the world. From Mexico to the Salomon Islands, she told us “I take something new from each culture I encounter and implement it in my life. I want my students to feel the same passion I feel when it comes to traveling and experiencing different cultures”.

These are just a few of the people and experiences that make up the diverse tapestry of our school community. Between our staff and our students, it is clear that at GCCS we live and breathe our mission of teaching students and their families to work successfully together across differences in language, culture, economic background, age and nationality.

Un espíritu Internacional en GCCS

Sra. Panzica en África

Cuando entras a Global Community Charter School y conoces a nuestros estudiantes y el personal puede sentir inmediatamente el espíritu internacional de nuestra escuela. Como una escuela situada en el vibrante y multicultural barrio de Harlem y como escuela candidata para ser parte del Bachillerato Internacional, GCCS cree en la importancia de exponer a nuestros estudiantes a una diversidad de culturas, idiomas y tradiciones. Una de las formas en que nuestra escuela fomenta la inclusión cultural y el intercambio es mediante el reclutamiento de maestros únicos con experiencia de trabajo en otros países. Aquí están las experiencias internacionales de sólo algunos de nuestros maestros y personal:

Sra. Kennelly en Sevilla

La Sra. Fenster, uno de los maestras de Kindergarten, se crió en Alejandría, Egipto y enseñó por primera vez en la escuela pública en su país de origen. "El inglés se enseña en los años de primaria combinados con el árabe, seguido por el francés en la escuela secundaria", explicó la Sra. Fenster. A partir de su experiencia en la enseñanza en Egipto, la Sra. Fenster entiende la importancia de aprender diferentes idiomas y exponer a los jóvenes a las contribuciones positivas que las diferentes culturas traen al mundo.

La Sra. Kennelly, otro miembro de nuestro equipo de Kindergarten, enseñó en Sevilla, España antes de venir a GCCS. En Sevilla, la Sra. Kennelly enseñó Ingles a través de juegos de rol y mucha conversación. En GCCS, ella aporta los conocimientos y experiencias que ha adquirido en el extranjero para sus estudiantes de Kindergarten.

La maestra de primer grado, la Sra. Bonfim es de Río de Janeiro, Brasil, donde enseñó en la Escuela Americana de Río de Janeiro, una escuela certificada como parte del Bachillerato Internacional. Le encanta llevar su cultura brasileña en el salón de clases a través de la música y el arte y le gusta discutir las diferencias entre Brasil y EE.UU. con sus alumnos.¡Las descripciones de su país de origen han capturado la imaginación de sus estudiantes que aspiran a visitar Brasil en un futuro!

Originario de la Benin en África occidental, nuestra maestra de tercer grado la Sra. Pognon le apasiona viajar y explorar el mundo. Dijo que el viajar la ha abierto su mente y le permite ver el mundo desde diferentes perspectivas. La Sra. Pognon anima a sus estudiantes a ser tan abiertos de mente como ella.

La clase de Sra. Dorce en África

Nuestra maestra de tercer grado la Sra. Dorce, proviene de una familia haitiana-estadounidense y es habla en francés / creole. Su pasión por la educación la ha llevado a Ghana, Benin y Gambia donde enseñó Inglés a través de las artes y la música. La Sra. Dorce dijo que "¡enseñar en África cambió mi vida! A pesar de que los recursos eran muy limitados, se sentía un ambiente muy feliz donde los niños se divierten aprendiendo y comunicándose a través de las artes y la música”.

La Sra. Scaccio es también una viajera del mundo y una maestra internacional. La Sra. Scaccio enseñó en una escuela que se enfoca en el medi ambiente en Tailandia antes de unirse a GCCS. Su escuela en Tailandia se estructura en torno a los principios budistas, tales como la apreciación de todos los seres vivos en el mundo. Como maestra, la Sra. Scaccio dijo "que tenía que inspirar y motivar a los niños a aprender sin necesidad de utilizar las técnicas tradicionales de disciplina que utilizamos en los Estados Unidos, tales como los sistemas de recompensa, la detención o quitando receso". Le encanta ver que en GCCS enseñamos a nuestros estudiantes para que sean ciudadanos de mente abierta al igual como enseñó a sus estudiantes en Tailandia.

Nuestra profesora de baile Sra. Panzica ha estado parte de varios proyectos en toda América Central, África, Australia, la India y el Caribe. Ella ha ayudado a construir casas, clínicas médicas, y campamentos infantiles, además de la enseñanza de la danza en los programas juveniles.

Sra. Brown en Chile

Antes de llegar a GCCS nuestra Coordinadora de PYP, la Sra. Brown vivió en Chile durante 4 años donde también trabajó como coordinadora de PYP, así como un profesora de kindergaten. Ella dijo que vivir en Chile fue una gran experiencia, pero muy difícil, puesto que tuvo que aprender español muy rápido con el fin de ser capaz de comunicarse con los padres de sus alumnos.

La maestra de quinto grado la Sra. Pierre-Louis es original de Canadá pero se considera como ciudadana del mundo. Ella ha viajado a más de 80 países y ha enseñado en 7 escuelas alrededor del mundo. Desde México hasta las Islas Salomon, nos dijo que "tomo algo nuevo de cada cultura que encuentro y lo pongo en práctica en mi vida. Quiero que mis estudiantes sientan la misma pasión que siento yo cuando se trata de viajar y experimentar diferentes culturas ".

Estas son sólo algunas de las personas y experiencias que conforman el tapiz diverso de nuestra comunidad escolar. Entre nuestro personal y nuestros estudiantes, es claro que en GCCS vivimos y respiramos nuestra misión de enseñar a nuestro estudiantes y sus familias a trabajar juntos con éxito a través de diferencias en el lenguaje, cultura, situación económica, edad y nacionalidad.

Competent Kids, Caring Communities at GCCS

According to research from The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, social and emotional learning can have a positive impact on school climate and can promote academic, social, and emotional benefits for students.

This year, we are excited to reintroduce the Competent Kids, Caring Communities (CKCC) program to GCCS. Competent Kids, Caring Communities is a school-wide social-emotional learning program from the Ackerman Institute for the Family.  It consists of a K-5 curriculum that fosters the acquisition of skills such as friendship building, expressing feelings, problem solving, organizational skills, study skills, and celebrating differences. 

Weekly lessons and activities are delivered by classroom teachers and behavior specialists and are reinforced through take home activities. In grades K-3, puppets are used to help students engage and connect to the activities. This program increases family-school collaboration, teacher-student-parent communication, and helps schools connect families to students’ learning.

Summer at Global Community Charter School

While our students were enjoying their summer vacation, big changes were happening at GCCS.

The first change you may have noticed is our beautiful new school mural. Our mural was inspired by our vibrant, multicultural school community and designed and painted by Creative Art Works, an organization that employs local young adults to work on community art projects. On August 9 we invited our community to join Creative Art Works in celebrating the completion of our mural. GCCS is proud to brighten the neighborhood with its beautiful new look!

While the outside of our building was being beautified we were also enhancing the inside. 

Our cafeteria kitchen received a complete upgrade with new appliances and a new school food menu. In partnership with Navin Brothers Food Service, GCCS is happy to provide its students and staff with healthy, freshly cooked meals. Our lunch period is more delicious than ever!

Both our music teacher Mr. Hughes and the Behavior Specialists received brand new rooms. Mr. Hughes and his students are very excited to have a spacious music room where they can sing and play instruments while the Behavior Specialists are thrilled to have you visit their roomy new office. 

Our Teachers’ Lounge was also renovated and furnished with a new kitchen and comfy furniture allowing our staff to meet with their peers, cook, and collaborate in their free time. 

We want to thank Mr. Jose, Mr. Quijada, and the rest of our maintenance team for working hard all summer to make these improvements. The building is freshly painted, the floors are waxed, and the classrooms are clean and ready for an exciting new school year.

Letter from Head of School for the 2016-2017 School Year

Dear GCCS Families and Friends,

Welcome to Global Community Charter School! 

I am so proud to announce that this year marks the 5th anniversary of our school’s opening.

Each and every year our school community has grown and improved in size and scope. Last year we welcomed more families, engaged in more complex areas of study, provided rich explorations in the creative arts, and introduced our first inquiries into the subject of science.

This year brings many more new developments that I am excited to share with you: from our new school mural and renovated music room to our state-of-the-art cafeteria kitchen and the completion of our final phase of International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program candidacy.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our new and returning families and staff. We would not have made it this far without your trust and support. Thank you for your continued support of our school community and mission.

¡Bienvenidos a Global Community Charter School! 

Estoy muy orgullosa de anunciar que este año se cumple el quinto aniversario de la apertura de la escuela.

Todos y cada año, nuestra comunidad escolar ha crecido y mejorado en tamaño y alcance. El año pasado recibimos a más familias,participamos más en áreas complejas de estudio, ofrecimos exploraciones ricas en las artes creativas e introdujimos nuestras primeras investigaciones cientificas. .

Este año estoy muy emocionada de anunciar que traemos muchas más novedades como  nuestro nuevo mural escolar y renovación del salón de música a una cocina/cafetería nueva y la realización de la fase final de la aplicación para ser miembros del Programa Internacional de Escuela Primaria del Bachillerato (PYP).

Me gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para agradecer a todas nuestras familias y personal escolar. No habríamos llegado tan lejos sin su confianza y apoyo. Gracias por su continuo apoyo a nuestra comunidad y misión escolar.
